This video essay explores the themes of representing underrepresented Indonesian women in the context of Indonesian history. All cutout assets are taken from the workshops I did for this brief, where women point out and annotate traces of women in the Indonesian archive.
The first song I used is by the late Titiek Puspa, a prominent female figure in Indonesian music, as she was one of the first nationally recognized female singers. The song title is Senja di Wajah Ayu (Sunset on a Beautiful Face).
The second song is Genjer-Genjer by Lilis Suryani. This song was popular in the 50s among leftists and is quickly associated with the communist party (PKI) and their female-only counterpart (Gerwani). During the demonization of communism following the coup of 1965, the New Order fabricated a story about how during the coup, members of Gerwani danced and took part in orgies as they mutilated the generals while singing Genjer-Genjer.
